New Normal?

I know you have heard the phrase new normal over and over again, but what exactly does that mean? Is it wearing the mask, staying 6 feet apart, the inability to visit family, or virtual school? None of this is normal. I think we should acknowledge the abnormality of it all first so that we can begin to live a life different from what we were used to. Embracing the changes that are going on in our lives did not come easy. In the beginning months, there were a lot of tears, frustration and resentment. As we slowly began to adapt we made it a goal each day to find a piece of joy. Whatever that meant to each of us each day. How did we do this?

  1. Every day we say one thing we are grateful for. No matter how big or small, simple or complex, find one thing to be grateful for and say it out loud
  2. Share our true feelings with each other so that we can support each other.
  3. Say something nice to other family members.

Maybe you’re thinking that these are simple things and you’d be right. But take a look at your family and admit to yourself how often you take the time to be grateful, share your feelings, and say nice things to each other daily. Our lives are not what they were a year ago and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. For my family, we’ve learned to be more intentional with our time, to focus on the good and to find joy in each day. This part of life can become normal for us. What have you learned about your family during the pandemic? Were you able to take the time to reconnect? If not, guess what, it’s not too late to make that a part of your new normal.
